Description Technical Specs Extended Information
Brown Bag filter bags are an invaluable item for providing sufficient drinking water to keep safely hydrated in the outdoors. The Brown Bag is designed as a replacement for the discontinued MOD Millbank bag (which is no longer in production and increasingly difficult to get hold of second-hand).

Filtering water through a Brown Bag removes turbidity - sand, mud, silt or other suspended particulate matter such as decomposing organic material – an important step in the production of clean drinking water.

To avoid nasty stomach upsets (or worse!), it’s important to remove such matter from water before you drink it. Even if there are no waterborne diseases present, particles suspended in water can irritate your digestive system.

Turbidity can also reduce the effectiveness of chemical treatments in neutralising pathogenic organisms. It can also clog up expensive pump filters.

Removing suspended particles is the Brown Bag’s primary purpose.

The Brown Bag couldn’t be easier to use but as a helpful reminder the instructions are attached to the bag as an embroidered label, so they are available each and every time you use the bag.

The Brown Bag is made from high quality canvas, which is manufactured to the same specifications as, and by the original manufacturers of, the canvas that was used in the production of the discontinued MOD Millbank bag. The canvas is rot resistant.

The Brown Bag comes with paracord for hanging. It is compact, durable and lightweight.

It is 100% UK made and is endorsed by SAS survival legend “Lofty” Wiseman.

The large size bag is ideal for groups.

Dimensions: 320mm wide x 800mm long x 4mm thick
Weight: 254 grams

A Brown Bag will not filter out pathogenic organisms, unless those organisms remain attached to the suspended matter that is filtered out. So, you will still need to use an additional form of purification – chemical sterilisation or heat – to kill off any viruses, bacteria and protozoa that may be present.

A Brown Bag combined with a Zebra Billy Can (16cm), a 7 litre Kirtley Kettle or a 10 litre Kirtley Kettle for boiling is an ideal, robust, easy-to-use water sterilisation system.

Note: It is essential that a new Brown Bag is broken in prior to using it on your next trip, expedition or adventure. The fibres and weave of the canvas need to be loosened up and opened to maximise its performance. To break in a Brown Bag, you need to: (i) saturate it in water and (ii) then be rough with it - scrunch it up, massage and squeeze it. Repeat this process 3 or 4 times allowing the bag to dry in between. You can also put the bag in the washing machine. Place it in a clean washing machine on a cold rinse cycle with NO detergent and NO fabric softener. Remove the paracord before placing it in the washing machine.
